I have recently found it necessary to return my computer back to its factory
settings and have ran windows update to download all the necessary security
fixes. Upon doing so, I have had to install SP3 along with a few other
security fixes.

I have now got the computer working again except for a couple of issues that
have arisen: The automatic updates are no longer beginning installation after
downloading the file; and I keep getting an explorer window for acrobat.com
appearing on reboot.

I have tried to update via the windows update site and get the same message
to say that the installation has failed. There is no error message other than
a window to say "The following updates were not installed:" followed by the
single security update I have left.

I discovered that I'm not the only person who has had this problem while I
was discussing the issue in a forum dedicated to the firewall I have
installed. I have tried uninstalling the firewall to see if that would work
but to no avail.

Hello Phloss,

For XP they are 2 o 3 solutions, here is two of them

Dial-ª-Fix

Go ahead and download Dial-ª-Fix.
<http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix>
Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download Dial-ª-fix

Click the Double green checkmark and click Go.

After it has finished, Reboot

Try Windows Update and see if you can get your updates installed.

OR

You might want to try Eddie Bowers tool:

Let us know what hªppens.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

This was spot on... cheers PA Bear =D
I've no idea why I couldn't find that in the kb myself mind you; poor
keyword choice maybe. (Now all I need to do is stop this explorer window
opening every time I boot up.)

Incidentally I see they have finally updated this article, including the title,
to acknowledge the fact that it also applies to new installs of XP ... nice to
see that this happened just barely before the upcoming new version of WUA makes
the entire article obsolete!

Harry.

Thanks for the heads up, Harry! (I'd love to see Upgrade & Recovery
installs mentioned, too.)

If the new WUA version (651?) works as advertised (and we'll just have to
see about that...), how long will it take us to get KB943144 revised again
so that the download link points to the new version? <eg>
