unable to update and updates zero in size

I accidentally uninstall a few items, including windows install. I've
reinstalled it(version 3.1). Now when i go to update it's given me a huge
lists of updates.

After it fails, I go into my history. Nothing is there except for "windows
install".

When I try to do a customer, I look closer at the updates and they're all 0
in size.

Please advise. I am running xp pro SP2. I 've already ran the WGA. If you
want an output of that I can show you.

Also, I remember the last time i successfully updated was on 10/7/2007. I
just boot this computer up today.

the updates may have already downloaded into the softwaredistribution/download folder
that's why they are 0 in size.

You may need to view the WU log to see why they are not installing -

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other
hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the
Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

THANKS it's working!!!! Now i know where these logs are located.


Alright. Did as suggested. From the log, I see:

AUClnt FATAL: Error: 0x80004002. wuauclt handler: failed to spawn COM server

Started both DCOM in services. No good. Did a search here on DCOM error and
got:

The solution is to go here http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/932494
and download WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86. Then from command prompt:

WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86 /wuforce
