Common problem April, see this link

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...5-b3e4a8596b3a
or
http://tinyurl.com/eaz8n

I used the regedit fix, reinstalled the previous update and then visited WU
and had a successful download of 913670.

a few things- One- unf'ing believable that MS would release this flawed
update that affects almost zero American consumer users. Second, there is No
acknowledgement by MS Update that anything is wrong.. I guess we have to wait
until the next Super Tuesday fix...third, reccomending regedit to people
posting on this site is very dangerous-- I consider myself relatively
experienced and still hate to even open regedit.
That said: regedit has no search capability that I saw. I used the main XP
search tool to search for the KB912475 files and found two registry entries,
which I deleted through the search findings window. I then successfully
reinstalled the KB912475 hotfix using the reccomended link for XP. However,
when I restarted and ran Windows Update it tried again to install the
previously downloaded KB913670 and again failed. So I do not see this as a
solution, although I appreciate the effort in solving MS's major snafu. I
sthere a way to eliminate the downloaded update so it will stop trying to
install? MS has now forced me to turn off their much-touted automatic
updates just to get through without all of the "failed installs".. Is this
what they consider "Live One Care"?!

I used the patch described below and after restarting it worked an installed
the update:

Download the "$NtUninstallKB912475$.zip" below and extract the folder to
C:\Windows
http://www.digitalforrest.com/images/killer7/myfiles/$NtUninstallKB912475$.zip
Now download the KB913670 update and it will install correctly this time.

I don't know if that needs to be done with the other instructions I already
followed, if so, maybe you could clarify.

Thanks for your help UNK...

p.s. I still think MS really stinks on this one

I worked for 3 days and this is the only help that worked. I went thru all
the steps in this message and then did the update and it went the first time.
Thanks

From the Registry (regedit) editor click on "My Computer" once to highlight it as the start
point, then click "Edit", "Find". Up pops a box to enter your search string...

> I used the main XP search tool to search for the KB912475 files and found two registry entries,

The main XP search does NOT search through the registry. The files you found were log files in
the Windows folder.

That's because you didn't actually reinstall the KB912475 hotfix... The hotfix saw that it was
ALREADY installed and ended without any errors and without creating the necessary
"$NtUninstallKB912475$" folder that KB913670 was looking for....

I see in your next post that you followed my instructions about the zip file and it was
successful. You're welcome.

Run regedit (START > RUN type regedit)
Find KB912475 (EDIT > FIND type KB912475)
Delete (EDIT > DELETE)
Repeat for all references to KB912475
Download the original KB912475 update and install it again.
http://au.download.windowsupdate.com...db899d851d.exe

Run the KB913670 update (START > All Programs > MicroSoft Update).

This should Install KB913670 to remove KB912475. If not, then write an
e-mail to Bill.

What a bloody joke!
