Unable to update Vista

I have automatic update turned on, but icon always says "Windows can't check
for updates". I check manually, I see the green bar "checking for updates" .
Then it stops and it never seems to have had any effect, as the "most recent
check for updates" remains stuck to 12/1/2008. I never get any error code.
In the update history, I notice that I have Windows Defender updates on
2/6/2009, but last Vista update (KB959108) is 12/1/2008.
I would appreciate any help you can suggest.

You may be seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=37919).

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
