Unable To Upgrade to IE7

I've made over twenty different attempts to install IE7 to Win XP Pro SP2
from IE 6. I did it successfully on two other machines, but the third, an
Inspiron 9200 with XP Pro SP2 won't upgrade, with the install ending with an
unsatisfactory warning and the requirement to restart and roll back to IE6.
Been in touch with MS, but they are no help. Many articles suggesting
running SUBINACL and the RESET command, which I've done. Also tried to
create a new user and log in and update with his identity, as well as
removing SPYSWEEPER, and Norton, and I tried the install in Safe Mode with
networking. MS makes dates to have second and third level techs call me up,
and they never do. The next time I call on the case, they tell me its been
closed. Calling at night gets you into the Black Hole of Calcutta, very
patient, friendly, and apologetic for everything, even the fact that they
can't spell your name after you repeat it about a zillion times. But they'll
gladly escalate the matter and make another appointment with a research
tearm member, who won't call you back at or near the time specified. So, my
little diatribe aside, and anyone give me some sugggestions about how to get
this piece of software up and running. Thanks in advance.

There should be some install log somewhere (C:\Document and
Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Temp?). Try looking for it based on
Date.

ALso is anything in Event Viewer?

Also check *.log files in C:\Windows ... sort by Modification date.

When error message comes up ... don't close it ... look for installation
temp folder and/or log files.
If you close it ... it may remove everything as far as tracking.

I had the exact same problem right down to the two additional machines that
worked fine. In my case the first technician solved the problem rather
rapidly although I have been thru that same series of dunces as you in the
past on other problems.

It was a registry permissions problem. They solved it by having me run a
small download which reset the registry permissions to defaults. I was
nervous but I haven't hads any problems.

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

[And I strongly recommend using

not Automatic/Windows Update.]
