While trying to run auto update I keep getting Error number: 0x80072EE7, I
did as the self help suggested and checked the host file and there was no
mention of microsoft in there. I've tried various other repairs including
even though I'm not on a LAN the auto LAN setting, installing sp3, running
sfc.exe /runnow, cleanning out the software distribution file. Finally I
downloaded the baseline security analyzer, which told me that the update
catalog file was corrupt. My question is. Is there a way to fix this, or do
I need to reinstall windows?

Do you mean the Windows Update Agent?

if so - A new version of the Windows Update Agent is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928

The above article gives you the links.
