Unable to use Microsoft Update (Error 0x80072F78)

I have been unable to update from the MSN update site. i have a new PC
running Windows XP Professional SP2 on a company network through a Proxy
Server. When checking for updates Error 0x80072F78 would come up after a long
time checking. I have followed various threads and tried installing the
referneced updates and changed various settings but nothing works. Now my PC
just sits there checking and does not appear to even come up with the error
it used to but I can't just leave it sitting there all day! This is so
frustrating can somebody HELP!!!???!!!

Are you trying to do Microsoft Update or Windows update? I was having an
issue using Microsoft Update where it would do the same thing as you
described. Would hang for several minutes then give me an error. I was able
to work around this by disabling the Windows Firewall but then found that it
isn't always the case as some other machines would still not update. I never
got a good reason or solution so I removed the Microsoft Update and went
back to Windows update. Problem solved in 2 minutes as opposed to several
hours trying to resolve or figure out why.
