Unable to use Sony Visual Communication Camera

Hi,

I have seen this posted before but there does not seem to be a
resolution so I thought I would start a new one. I have just purchased
a Sony Vaio VGN-FW290JTB. This machine is running Windows Vista Home
Premium 64bit. I have installed Windows Live Messenger 2009 (build
14.0.8050.1202). I am unable to run the audio and video setup to get
messenger to run with my laptop camera. The error message I get is 'We
are unable to run audio and video setup. I have tried to re-installed
the camera drivers and have also disabled and re-enabled the device but
it still will not connect.

There is a program on the laptop called Arcsoft WebCam Companion 2 that
does recognize the camera and shows live video.

Does anyone have a solution or suggestion as to why this will not work?

Thanks,

MM

Hi, I'm having exactly the same problem, but with a Logitech QuickCam
Communicate STX. The webcam works fine with the Logitech 'QuickCapture'
software, but I also can't run the audio and video setup from within
Messenger.

The system specs are:
ASUS P5KPL-VM
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300
Inno3d 8500GT
2GB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Okay after contacting Sony support and getting just the usual "Install
the ArcSoft WebCam software and update your audio drivers" I decided to
uninstall Windows Live Messenger 2009 and install Windows Live Messenger
2008. Guess what it works no problem. I was able to configure my
on-board audio and webcam. Looks like the 2009 version has some bugs.

Yeah, my problem is actually with my sisters PC, and she uses her webca
almost daily online to video chat to friends. So being a prett
important feature, I rolled back to 8.1 and the problem is resolved (a
least temporarily)

But it's strange, because the webcam did work for a short while wit
the 2009 version, but at some point decided to just stop working

Also, it's not too reassuring to find so little about this specifi
problem online - leading me to worry about whether or not they even kno
about the 'bug', and therefore if it will ever get fixed... :shock

Mine actually did work for about 30 minutes but the next time I went to
use it the web cam did not work. I agree that there is almost no info
on the web for this which I find odd.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, I can't try right now as I'm a
university and the problem is on my sisters PC at home, but I'll make
note to try it when I'm next visiting! :

I ended up un-installing the Windows Live Messenger 2009 and installin
the 2008 version. Once I did this I have had no problems configurin
the web cam or using it. It seems there is a bug or conflict with thi
version and Vista
