When I go to update.microsoft.com, I get the message "checking for the latest
version of microsoft updating software." It then goes to another screen with
"files required to use windows update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue: (1) register or reinstall the files for me
now (recommended) or (2) let me read about more steps that might be required
to solve the problem." When I select option 1, it simply goes back to
"checking..." then "files required....", repeating over and over. Trying
option 2 and looking for problems with "windows update" for Windows XP and
"problem accessing windows update," none of the 15 topics returned would seem
to apply. Running XP Professional Ver 2002 SP1 (ok, it's old; that's what
I'm trying to upgrade). Any suggestions?
