Unable to view and install software & hardware optional updates???

After downloading and installing high priority updates from windows update
service today I find that I cannot view or install software optional or
hardware optional updates. Choices in left margin indicate that there are 7
software and 5 hardware updates available but when I click on either of these
selections nothing happens (no screen update, no errors shown)
