My daughter is having problems with her laptop. She is using a H
DV5135NR that was originally supplied with XP Pro. It was successfull
updated through SP3 the I upgraded it to Vista Home Premium throug
Microsoft store.
At present it will start but goes to Error Recover screen. It will boo
in safe mode but not with Networking. When booting to Normal Startup i
gets a screen asking for Product Key again. Once it is keyed in and Nex
is selected it just sits, never goes anywhere but eventually will reboo
and comes back to the same screen. There is an option to go online an
activate. When selected it opens explorer but never connects.
Basically the computer is non functional until I can get it to boot t
something

Any suggestions

Thanks in advanc

Did you go to the HP site and see if there were Vista drivers for the
installed components?

Might wanna do that... with another computer, of course.

Hi,

You didn't mention if the upgrade to Vista ever completed or if it failed in
midstream and that's where you are stuck. I wouldn't be surprised if that
were the case as you can't upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium, it
would have had to been a clean installation. You are likely lacking drivers
to support the system hardware (as a clean install will not port over
drivers from the existing installation), and from your description it's
likely the netword card. You'll need to get them from HP's site (did you
check to see if her system supports this upgrade? Not all do).

You can't upgrade from XP Pro to Home Premium, it's on the box & says
so when you try. It will do a fresh install and any XP files it
thinks are important will be put into a directory called Windows Old.

I'm intrigued as to why the Microsoft 'people' didn't inform the OP.

Luckily for me I've got a copy of XP bare to the bone which I can use
as a base (only takes around 15 minutes to load) but it is a great
shame that they (MS) have taken that road, bet they'll do something
similar with Windows 7.
