Unbinding VM Network Services

(XP/SP3, VPC 2007) If I go to Network Connections and uncheck "Virtual Machine
Network Services" (for Local Area Connection 2, internet) I get no suggestions
that I reboot or that "... will take effect the next time ..." and my internet
connection is hosed. "IPCONFIG /RENEW" gives errors.

Should I have been advised to reboot? Does the driver unbind itself correctly?

That was just an added tidbit ... my attempt to fix the problem. The main point
was that my internet connection was hosed ... nothing worked. The "trying to
connect" icon appeared in the tray and stayed there 5-10 minutes until I
rebooted. And I failed to mention earlier that VPC was not running when I
unchecked "Virtual Machine Network Services" in TCP/IP's properties.

I just tried checking it again. Instantly, a VPN connection died. I could
reconnect it. IPCONFIG looked OK and renewed OK. Then I unchecked it again.
The VPN connection instantly died and the "Local Area Connection 2" icon
appeared in the tray ... "Acquiring network address" ... a few minutes now. I'm
going to reboot.

P.S., None of these things happen if I uncheck/check (for example) "Network
Monitor Driver".
