I'm replying to this old thread because of the lack of information for
this Vista bug...
I hit this "rename file, file disappears" bug somewhat regularly. But I
can't predict when it will happen. Renaming photos, or arbitrary files.
Sometimes they just disappear. I just renamed a file and had it
disappear, renamed the only other in the same directory, and now the
directory looked empty. But the files are not actually gone.
What appears to be happening is that the explorer window is merely not
refreshing the view properly. Hit F5 (refresh) and all the files show up
properly. I'm a frequent computer user, and this is the only Vista bug
I've encountered (caveat: I waited for Vista SP1).
I don't know if this is a Vista Ultimate x64 only bug, but strangely I
now suspect that it may be a "higher end" Vista problem since I haven't
found more people complaining about it. I don't recall seeing the
problem on x86, but it could be there.
Your "rename, undo, redo" trick didn't trigger the bug for me. It would
be nice for Microsoft if someone found and reported a repeatable
scenario to produce the bug effect. In the meantime, just hit F5.
