"Windows update has finished installing your updates. Please restart your
computer. (or smething like that.)"

2 buttons. 1 says restart now, the other says restart later.

I clicked later.

a few minutes later, I get the same message again. And again. and
againandagainandagain.

I get fed up with the stupid thing - I can't restart right now, as I am in
the middle of some VERY IMPORTANT work. I go outside to get a cup of coffee.
When I come back, MY COMPUTER HAS RESTARTED.

It is not my computer's fault. It is the fault of the programmer who
thought it would be a good idea to force a computer to restart after
installing updates, AFTER THE USER HAS CLICKED LATER, NUMEROUS TIMES, EVERY
FEW MINUTES.

if this type of activity was email based, I would report it as spam. As it
is, I will not buy another microsoft product. I am looking forward to
firefox, thunderbird, and a linux o/s. Either that, or I will buy a mac mini
and do all my work on that - using open source or non-microsoft products.

No other company has the arrogance to think they can tell users what to do.

I am deeply appalled, and dissapointed (again.)

So now it's everyone's fault that YOU allowed a Windows update to occur while you were "in the
middle of some VERY IMPORTANT work". It was SO IMPORTANT that you went for coffee too....

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, "Automatic Updates", and check the box, "Notify me but
don't automatically download or install them.", click "Apply", and OK your way out.

Now apologize to uncle Bill, get a life, and learn how to use that computer as a tool instead of
an excuse.

First don't use automatic updates. Use a custom install from the WU (or
MU) site and install the ones you want when you went. Second if you do
an install let it restart otherwise you can create more problems. Use
your head and take control of things rather than blaming someone else
for what you failed to do.

Thankyou to all the messages received. I will not apologise, I do not need
a dummy.

To those who decided they knew my computer expertise before they knew me, I
am a web designer / programmer, who has had over 10 years experience with
windows in general. I am usually the person who fixes problems like this. I
install automatic updates only in order to keep my edition of windows
'secure', and will NOT turn this feature off. Previously, windows has
allowed me to decide when to re-start my computer. This time, it made the
decision for me. A computer is a tool, but when a tool tries to have a mind
of it's own, then you get problems.

For the people with suggestions, thank you, and I will keep in mind. For
the Unks who did not leave names, thankyou for no help whatsoever. The
arrogance I speak of is that which turns a user into the cause of the
problem, not the software, when the SOFTWARE IS MADE FOR THE USER.

Microsoft's logo is where do you want to go today - not where will the
software take you today - important difference.

I have cleared the notify of replies check-box, and will be vacating my
hotmail address for a gmail one soon, so there's no need to reply here,
unless you want to vent your frustrations in a like minded way, or enjoy
abusing a user who will not be reading your replies.
