Unexpected error (8000ffff) when checking for windows updates

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium and am having trouble with checking
for updates via the Windows update app. When i click on check for updates it
does what it's doing for about 30 seconds and then comes back with an
unexpected error (8000FFFF).

I've read through a few other threads on this discussion group and tried a
few of the solutions in there (Stopping the windows update service and
deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarting and trying again) but it
comes up with the same problem.

When checking to see the latest updates that were installed to see if one of
them could be the problem, I find that the latest update "installed" was
Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.734, so I'm assuming that that is the
problem. All things indicate that this update was installed correctly, so I
don't know why it would not be working.

When checking the WindowsUpdate.log file, it has these lines:

Are your time, date and *time zone* settings correct? Do you reside in UTC
+10 time zone?

Did you upgrade to Vista Home Premium? How many GB of RAM does the machine
have?

yes my time, date and time zone settings are correct, I do live in UTC +10,
is there some sort of problem in Vista with regards to this time zone? Vista
Home Premium came preinstalled on this machine (a HP Pavilion 6702TX
Notebook), and I have 1GB of RAM.

it might help to know that every time i restart my machine, it says that it
is "configuring updates" before it comes up with the welcome screen. the last
update installed was Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.734 so that is what i
suppose it is trying to configure :s

I also get the same error message, along with the same Configuring Updates
message with every log on. Has there been a fix announced for this?
If not, how do I go about opening a support request?

Cheers,
Chris

I spent about an hour and a half on the phone with Microsoft Technical
Support trying to fix this, we went through the log file, etc etc. in the end
the solution was to run an in place upgrade of vista to refresh everything
(you wont lose your data if running an in place upgrade). i opted to just
completely re-install vista (this will involve recovery discs if your vista
install came preinstalled on your system).

I ended up doing an in place upgrade My "Turn Windows Features On/Off" was
totally empty, and the suggested MS fix (as in the KB) for that didn't do a
thing to help me. I read a few posts on the net saying to do an upgrade to
fix it, so I thought I may as well. I have a lot of apps installed and didn't
fancy re-installing them.

If it happens again though, I'll probably do a fresh install (here's
hoping SP1 brings some stability).
