Hello,

Does anyone know what is so important for MS, that they update XP Pro at 3
am and force the computer to rerstart without owners will???
Why do they reboot customer computers without promise?

What is so important here, that MS can't wait, or is it something not listed
in event viewer below?:
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - October 2006 (KB890830)

- Security Update for Windows XP (KB917422)

- Security Update for Windows XP (KB923191)

- Security Update for Windows XP (KB924496)

- Security Update for Windows XP (KB923414)

- Security Update for Windows XP (KB922819)

- Security Update for Windows XP (KB924191)

I have set intentionally XP Autoupdate to " download updates for me, but let
me choose when to install".
So it has been for a year until lately, when on one morning the computer was
restarted by Microsoft, on the corner of the screen was small text telling
that there were essential security updates requiring a reboot!!! And also as
a result Autoupdate was set to Automatic against my will.

As a result:
1. essential network services had been stopped ...
2. The work open on the desktop was destroyed and file corrupted.
3. Among others the Windows Update KB917422 was installed, which doesn't let
Macmillan dictionary to run. (Either the KB917422 fix KB924867 doesn't work
btw)

Rina,
The same thing happened to me. It happened on Oct 11, the day SP1 was being
desupported. My disk started making lots of noise as Microsoft started
loading all kinds of things on my hard drive.

One of those "things" was SP2. Another was a new .NET version. Microsoft
even de-installed every single SP1 fix I had installed. Search for the file
EVENTVWR.MSC in Windows Explorer and you'll see a complete log of everything
Microsoft has been loading onto your hard drive without your permission,
knowledge or consent. This is a very ugly bully-tactic on their part.

I have not rebooted since Oct 9 or so. Here is what I plan to do:
-- Back up my entire hard drive with Norton Ghost and make the copy bootable
then disconnect the backup hard drive
-- Save all the new files I want to keep (save them onto another computer)
-- Disconnect from the internet
-- Do a System Restore to Oct 9 and replace the new files I saved
-- Manually set another Save Point for the current date in case Microsoft
tries that intrusive against my permission loading again.

NOTE: I have no idea if this will work, just sharing my current thoughts.
Please run this idea past experts before trying, and DO please back up your
hard drive or at least its most important data.
