Hello

I have a Vista Ultimate operating system. I have two partitions: C an
D. In C I have my windows and in D i had my documents. Last times th
computer booted from the hard disk I had to repair my Vista to let m
enter in the windows

Because of that I formatted my C partition, by deleting it and creatin
it again. And when I logged in my fresh Windows surprize. All the inf
in the old C partition was now in my D, and the old D is missing. Thos
were my documents

Is it possible for me to recover the data in the old D drive? I reall
need those. :
Can you recommend me a software program that can recover that data?
don't mind the price of the licence, as far as it works with grea
results

Thank you in advance

You may want to check Disk Manager and see if the C drive was named D. If
it is, you can try and rename it back to C and see if D re-appears.

Another question: What if your system was operating correctly and your hard
drive died? What about your backups? It seems as though you don't backup
your data. Remember, it's not IF your drive will fail it's WHEN. For the
future, always assume that when you power up your computer, it might die.
Always backup important files.

You didn't backup your documents on some external media such as a DVD or
hard drive? When you format a disk, you format the whole disk, not just one
of the partitions on it. If you have multiple partitions on a disk and you
format the disk, you get a disk with one partition on it, usually C:.
Software does exist to recover from reformatting. But since you re-installed
Vista, the chances of getting your documents back is about zero.
Moral of this story: back your files up.

You are wrong Tyro. Windows formats partitions, not whole drives, unless
there is only one partition on the drive.

Aliniuz, I wish I could help you recover your files but I can't. Like Tyro
said, regular backups should be done.

Windows does funny things with partition names. It looks to me that Windows
may have installed itself in the old partion that you erased, and then
renamed it. If that is true, then you might have another partition with a
new letter (C: or E:?) that might have your old data.

It is also possible that you installed Windows on the old D: partition by
mistake or by virtue of a Windows problem, in which case, I'm sorry, you
have actually lost your data.

There are data recovery programs that might be able to get some of it back,
even after formatting. They often have a trial version that tells you what
they can find, but won't rescue it until you pay for the program.

I have used this company's products with decent success:
http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-products.htm

They have, inter alia, GetDataBack for NTFS ($79) and GetDataBack for FAT
($69). You probably would try the first of those, since under Vista your
drive was most likely NTFS.

There are other companies too. I have no connection to that one, other than
being a satisfied customer.
