Ungodly slow updates on XP

Somebody please help me---it's Day 4 and my updates are still dowmloading! I
have 512MB, dial-up ISP. This has never happened. I scanned for
malware--clean machine. What gives and what can I do?

How are you downloading the updates? Windows/Microsoft Updates? Or
Automatic Updates? The later download only in the background. Switch
to http://updates.microsoft.com for better performance. If you do that,
I would tell Automatic Updates to only notify rather than download.
That will cause most Security Center systems (including the one built
into Windows XP SP2 and Vista) to complain, but the results are worth it.
