Uninstall / Rollback pending updates?

Windows Update has automatically downloaded updates to my machine, including
the .net 2.0 framework changes which are causing colossal nightmares in
other applications. (April 2008) When I restart, XP will automatically
complete the update, which I do not want. How can I:

A) remove the update which Windows Update has queued up for installation on
the next boot?

-or, if it is too late,-

b) roll back my OS to the state before this update was automatically
implemented?

Normally I set the windows update to request line-item confirmation of all
updates from admin (me) before any download/install. I don't know how this
one got by, but I'll deal with that later.

Updates pending are residing in the softwaredistribution/downloads folder
which is where Windows put the updates temporarily before installation. This
folder resides in the Windows folder on the installation drive.

Once you clear out the update you don't want, then manually go to the WU
site and hide the update or in the alternative, when you're next offered the
update that you have deleted out of the temporary folder automatically,
uncheck the update and you'll be given the option to hide the same.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website > Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete > Uncheck/deselect the update(s) you don't wish to install and hide
it ("Don't show me this update again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
