Did this work for you? The best thing to do here is to probably uninstall
your installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2, and attempt the installation
again. You will very likely get a more stable installation this time, since
there is a preparation phase between uninstalling and reinstalling. Here is
the procedure:
First, we take the Windows XP Operating System (OS) back in time to a moment
when it was stable prior to installing Service Pack 2 (SP2):
Yes, we can (virtually) go back in time where the Operating System is
concerned, and undo the instability! Here's how:
1. As you boot the machine, press F8 to enter Safe Mode.
2. Log into the local Administrator account.
3. Click Start
4. Click Run
5. type: msconfig
6. Click OK or hit the <Enter> key.
7. When the System Configuration Utility opens, make sure you are looking at
the General tab.
8. Click the "Launch System Restore" button. This will open a wizard.
9. On the calendar in the wizard, select (day before the date that you
installed SP2.).
10. Click OK through the wizard and reboot. This should bring you back to a
working and stable Windows XP.
11. Follow the steps in getting Windows XP prepared for SP2 here:

12. Get a better installation of SP2 by ordering it online here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx
13. Or download, save, and then install SP2 all by itself from here:
SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center (please disregard the IT
Professionals and Developers portion of this, as it will run on an
individual computer as well: (266 MB)

14. Next, scan for updates, and reply back to this thread, letting us know
how this went!
Sincerely,
