I have seen several uninstall tools that say they do a better job than
the windows uninstaller by removing unneeded registry keys and left over
files. Are any of these worth using?

The only time I use a third-party uninstaller (like Revo) is when the
uninstall from Programs & Features (which after all is just calling the
program's own uninstallation routine) has for some reason failed. I don't
suggest using one regularly. If the program's uninstallation routine isn't
the best and leaves some extra registry keys, this causes no harm to the
system, takes up no real room, and has no impact on the speed of the
system. In cases where the program was extremely invasive and didn't
uninstall cleanly and is therefore causing an issue (Norton, McAfee, other
antivirus programs, etc.), it is best to look for a proprietary cleanup
tool on the program mftr.'s website.

And on the off-chance you are confusing uninstallers with registry cleaners,
as far as registry cleaners go they are all garbage at best and destructive
at worst.

When working with the registry, it is always wise to work from the first
position of "leave well enough alone".

Thanks. I figured it was BS but I thought I would ask.

Well I won't go as far as to say it's BS because if you use a lesser
third party registry editor you really can do damage to your system.
However .. the registry editors I listed are very safe and easy to use.
The odds of someone actually damaging their system (esp with Advance
Windowscare Personal) are VERY slim. It's basically foolproof. The above
poster was simply exaggerating or has had a bad experience with a lesser
(or more complex) registry editor.

Can you provide some benchmarks that prove this?

Just to add to Kerry's question to you , can you also tell me how do you get to your back ups that any of those registry cleaners did when the system will not boot because of what was removed by one of those snake oil registry cleaning tools.

Well, if for some reason your system dosen't boot, you'll need to pop in
your Vista DVD and do a repair first. Then once you get into Vista, go
through the required motions to load the backup the said program made.
They're all different, so I can't really tell you one way to load the
backup whatever prog you used made. The simple solution would be to find
how you would load the backup before using the program just incase there
is an issue.

Like I said, though ... if you use a reputable registry
defragger/cleaner/etc you shouldn't have any issues. I've been using the
progs I listed for quite some time and they have not once deleted any
key registry files or caused any harm to my systems whatsoever. Just
steer clear from unknowns and you'll be fine.

If they are that safe, they are only removing stuff which could be left
where it is..
