One can, of course, choose not to install all the components of MS Office.
For example, you can elect not to install Excel. What happens if there is an
Office Security Update that is directed to an uninstalled Office component
and you download and install the update? Does it really update the Office
component? Does it stay on your hard drive until you elect to install the
Office component and then update it? Or something else?

Office Update offers updates for Office programs that you do not have installed

Interesting, but the KB article doesn't quite resolve the issue.

The article describes:

Scenario 2
By default, this behavior may occur when updates become available for
components that may not be installed. Additionally, this behavior may occur
when users choose not to install certain components.

and suggests, as one workaround:

Method 1
Install the recommended update even if the feature is not being used.

Suppose there's a security update for an "uninstalled component" and I elect
to install the update anyway. Then, later on, I decide I really want that
component, so I install it from the CD. When I next to to Office Update,
does it (a) detect that I have the unpatched original install and offer me
the update again, or (b) see from my update history that I've already
downloaded the update, and thus leave me with the unpatched version, or
(least likely) (c) automatically run the update which has been sitting around
on my hard drive just waiting for me to install the previously-uninstalled
component?

I suspect the answer is (b), in which case you should never elect to install
recommended updates for Office components you have not yet installed.

Personally I don't install the updates for the products I don't have installed -
therefore I ignore them and don't download them.
