I was wondering if I can uninstall any windows updates that may not be needed
anymore since they are updated all the time. I want to gain some space on my
computer and was told I can do this but wasn't told exactly how and if it
would cause any problems.

Given the grief that can befall people who delete their update uninstallers,
the best advice is simply to upgrade your hard disk to a larger size.

I'm afraid that upgrading your hard disk is a lot easier said than done.
You would have to install the new hard drive as a second hard drive on your
computer, use specialist backup software to create an image of your old hard
drive on the new one then change the jumper settings so your computer uses
the new drive instead of the old one. And it would not surprise me if
Windows declares that it needs to be reactivated, somewhere along the way!
Not for the faint-hearted and difficult for the inexperienced.

To make more space on your disk
1) Under Programs - Accessories - System Tools you will find Disk Cleanup.
Run this.
2) Under Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs review the list of programs
and uninstall any that you recognise but no longer use (old games, for
example). If you don't know what a program does I would not advise you to
uninstall it.
3) Disks usually fill up with photos or downloaded music. See what you can
copy onto CDs or DVDs then delete those files from the hard drive once you
have made a backup

Here's a utility that will do it for you. Be sure to read the full content of
the web page in order to understand the pros and cons of using this utility.

Utility To Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry
entries.

Read this first:

I want to Save Space and delete unnecessary files after installing a
Windows Update patch or Service Pack.

You can use this program to automate the removal of update uninstall
files that have *NOT* caused any issues.
IF an update should happen to cause an issue, then you would want to
retain the uninstall files. If no issue related to an update has
appeared within 3 -4 weeks of installing it, then it's safe to remove
the uninstall files.

XP_Remove_Hotfix_Backup.exe - Removes Hotfix Backup files and the
Add/Remove Programs Registry entries
