Unknown IP address

I have to communicate from my PC (Windows Vista) with a device that runs
Windows XP, has no
keybord and disply. Problem is that I don't know its ip address. I thout to
run WIreshark on my PC but I don't know whats the best ip address and mask
that I should set in my PC to asure that the sniffer would "see" the
packets.
Can someone advise please?

1. How does the other device get its IP address?
2. Is the other device hooked up to the same router as you?
