unlocking files

I am trying to defrag my hard drive but it says that it is 40% fragmented
but I cannot defragment these files because they are locked.......... how do
I unlock them?

You don't. They are protected system files, and probably OS installation
files too. If you like to tidy up your hard drive, you should consider
deleting some old system restore points instead.

Those are probably system files -MFT, system restore points, paging file
etc which the Windows defragger and other free defraggers don't touch
(AFAIK). You will need to get a third party defragger such as Diskeeper
to defrag those. You will need to run a boot-time defrag infact, to
defrag those system files since those are not defraggable when windows
is running. You can trial versions of Diskeeper pro here:
