Unplanned Shutdown Recovery

While trying to install the latest (1/9/08) updates, Vista Basic rebooted,
went into the Configuring phase, then rebooted again, coming up in Safe Mode,
saying it hadn't been shutdown properly. I let it come up normally, and it
continued configuing, but gave me a msg 'Windows has recovered from an
unplanned shutdown'. Meanwhile, all of the updates failed, and I'm still
being asked if I want to install them. I'm getting paranoid with Vista,
because last week I had to reinstall due to Boot and Startup Recovery
failures. Any suggestions? Thanks.
