Unstalling XP Service Pack 2

Greetings...I have done a complete system recovery on an HP Pavilion ze1250
notebook. I have installed Norton Anti Virus 2005 successfully, but no other
applications yet. I have run Windows update and installed numerous critical
and other updates without a problem. Service Pack 2 shows as needing to be
installed but it has failed twice and provided the message "failed to install
catalog files". The installation then quits. Any suggestions?
