when I get an alert from automatic update and try to install, I get an error
message saying the update was not successfully installed, I've gotten it with
installations for windows media player and security pack for explorer7. Does

You cannot install some updates or programs

When you examine the %systemroot%\Windowsupdate.log file, you may see an entry for one of
the following errors:. 0x80096001

So does this mean there is no solution or 'fix' for this problem and how does
it affect explore7, not being able to update security packs? Thanks

SirDuke, did you try any of the suggestions mentioned in the article?

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic
service is running on this computer"

1. Start, Run, type: Services.msc
Make sure "Cryptographic Services" service is running and the Startup type is Automatic.
If it isn't, right-click the service and select Properties and set to Automatic. If the
service is not shown as "Started", you can start it by clicking the Start button.
Close the Services control panel and try installing the service pack or security patch.

2. If "Cryptographic Services" service was already running then stop the service by
clicking the Stop button, then using Windows Explorer, locate the folder
Windows\System32\catroot2 and rename it to something like catrootold. Now restart
"Cryptographic Services" by clicking the Start button, and try installing the update.

3. If the update still fails to install, stop the "Cryptographic Services" service.

Open a command prompt window (click Start, Run, type cmd and hit Enter) and then type the
following commands:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Restart "Cryptographic Services" by clicking the Start button again, and try installing
the update.

Could be an indication that the cryptographic service isn't working properly
See: http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html

If the cryptographic services is okay, perhaps you may need to rename the Catroot2 folder
see:-You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798
Method 3: Rename the Catroot2 folder

One more thing is that when I try to rename the catroot2 folder by using the
commmand prompt/cmd to enter:

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

It says either the same thing or somthing about an invalid syntax(sp?) I
think i got the syntax msg when i typed "command prompt" in the -run- window,
cmd i got that "program in use" msg
