unwanted automatic update

I had automatic update enabled on my windows xp machine.
I recently received the SP2, but i do not want to install
it because of all of the problems it has been causing (my
roommate is unable to start up his computer after
installing it). i previously had approximately 3
gigabytes of free space on my hard drive, but now i only
have 128 megabytes. i haven't installed any programs in
a month at least, and i haven't done anything at all that
would have taken up that much space. i'm assuming that
this space is being taken up by the SP2 that i don't want
to install. my question is this: is there any way i can
delete the SP2 without installing it?

Jon;
Turn off Automatic Update:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab
Make appropriate selection.

Perform step 5 to delete what has been downloaded:

Your room mates issues may be because of lack of preparation:

thanks for the help! i followed your directions, but it
still says that there is an update that i need to
install. it won't go away...any ideas?
