I am running Vista Home Premium.

I have a Windows "New Update" icon sitting in my notification area which I
do not want or need. Does anyone no of a way to get rid of this irritation?

TIA,
Ed

Use the MU]WU and Update whatever there is there. Either allow the update or if not
hide it

Thanks, Peter. I don't want the update - it's for IE8 and I don't use IE8. I
have, of course, hidden the icon, like you say, but that is not what I
really want.

No. Don't hide the icon, hide the update. In windows update right
click the update and choose hide update

I think there is a little confusion here. You don't want the IE8 update or you do not want the "shield icon" in the tray?
If you go to Windows Updates, use the Custom selection and IE8 is offered, uncheck the box in front.
Then when you go the next step it should ask if you want to see this update selection again?
You can mark "NO" and IE8 should not be offered again and the "shield icon" will go away until there is another update being offered.

H wants satisfaction.

He isn't getting it from you, but maybe from Richard Simmons. He wants
action, satisfaction, all night long and no more "update" icon.

Hi, Richard.

Sorry to be so long coming back - forgot before hitting the sack!.

I go to Windows Update, I uncheck the box but there is no "next step" and no
"NO" option, merely "Cancel". I hit cancel but the icon remains in the
notification area and the IE8 check box rechecked. (I see no reference for
"Custom")

If I right click the item - checked and unchecked - all I get is a message
telling me how necessary IE8 is. (Even so, I don't want it).

Having had some trouble recently with IE8 I uninstalled it and reverted to
IE7. I am beginning to suspect a registry entry remains that is calling up
this icon regardless of my wishes. I was hoping someone might no about this.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Ed

Hi, Richard.

I'm not sure how.... I right clicked the IE8 update while it was unchecked
and followed a link. Something like 'close selection' came up which I chose.
Anyway, the icon has now disappeared. I restarted the pc just to make sure.

Thanks for all the input..., and thanks JEWboy for making me smile!
