Unwanted icons on DeskTop -- not "shortcuts"

When I download (like Adobe) from net, my OS asks not if I want to "run," but
only if I want to "copy." Yes, from the "copy" I can install the wanted
software. But the icon directing me to "install" remains on my desktop and
all attempts to delete unwanted icon cause a failure to start on restart and
the "repair" always replaces the icons. If I don't get an education, I'll
eventually have a desktop full of icons I neither need nor want. Help! And
thanks for your time.

That sounds to me like the application that put the "install" icon on
the desktop doesn't want you to remove it.

Please attach a screenshot of you desktop so I can see.

Also, use MSCONFIG (-<WIN_LOGO_KEY>+<R>, MSCONFIG, <ENTER>-) to disable
any unwanted startup applications and non-microsoft services, which may
include this errent "install" program.

I don't believe this is a binaries group. Maybe he could post a link to a
screen shot.

Apologizing for my inexperience. Maybe Thursday before I can get a
"screenshot." Have never done it, plus don't know how to attach to this
reply. Don't want to waste your valuable time, so if I don't hear from you,
I'll understand.

Thanks.

Some icons on the Desktop are just pointers to code which is stored
elsewhere. Deleting that kind of icon won't remove the code.
Such icons have a small arrow on them, and usually say "Shortcut" in
the icon text. You should have absolutely no problems deleting such
icons.

And some icons on the Desktop are the actual installation programs you
downloaded. These don't have shortcut arrows, since they aren't
shortcuts.

The icons you are referring to represent the actual installation
programs you downloaded. If you've already installed the program,
simply delete the icon representing the installer if you don't want to
keep them for later reinstallation if necessary.

If you have installed the program on the Desktop itself, attempting to
delete such "icons" might cause problems. In that case, you will have
to go into "Programs and Features (in Control Panel) to delete them.
Once you do that, the icon should disappear. I've never encountered
your problem before, so I can't speak specifically to YOUR problem.

Sorry 'bout the delay. Landed in the hospital Wednesday night.

Have been able to generate copy of desk top, but don't see clearly how to
attach it to this communication. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Donald,

I, too, have the same prob as the OP. I understand your reply and it makes
sense to delete the desktop icons that are the 'setup' files. Here's my
question...How would I know if the programs the icons are representing are
installed somewhere other than the desktop if the icon is on the desktop?
(eeeeks...make sense?)

When right-clicking and checking the properties of the 3 icons I want to
delete (Antivirus and Spyware programs I just upgraded) it says they're
applications. (.exe) ??? One is 20 MB...other is 111MB. Since I've
already clicked on these and installed the programs, can these be safely
deleted? I certainly don't want to delete my whole Antivirus program.

Thanks!
