Unzipping compressed files w/ Vista

I have downloaded compressed (zip format) pictures from a favorite website.
The Vista help section for unzipping these files is to extract them by
dragging from one location to another location. I have tried this, but it
doesn't work. However, a while ago, I had downloaded one of these compressed
files to my Desktop and then copied it to "Pictures" folder. I tried the
procedure for loading new wallpaper using the Vista's built-in procedure on
the Desktop by initiating the procedure by right-clicking and following the
instructions. This procedure successfully used the compressed file and
installed the new wallpaper as well as placing an unzipped format of the file
in my Pictures folder. But, when I try to download another picture, I can't
get it to unzip and when I open a copy of this, the window pulsates
abnormally and locks my computer.

Any suggestions?

Download Winzip for Vista, you can use the full evaluation free for about 50
unzips or something, and then you buy Winzip for $20 and be done with it.

Vista unzips by itself.
Also don't get winzip. rip off when there's better free apps like WinRAR.

It doesn't work on this Vista machine, and I got tired of trying to figure
it out why Vista is blasting off to the moon when it encountered a zip
file.

It works for me, and you don't tell me what to do, keep it to yourself.

There is no EXTRACT button when right-clicking! I tried this option long ago.
As for winrar, I just did a Google-search for this software and it's NOT free.
There is a free download, but one must purchase it later at $29.00. Plus,
there are limitations w/ the initial download (winrar version 3.71).

Try 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/). It's free. It has never failed to open any
zip file so far on my Vista machine.

For me, double-clicking .zip files opens them just fine in my Vista Home
Premium. Mine is a new machine with Vista preinstalled, not an upgrade --
don't know if that would make a difference.
