When I download fonts from the internet to download onto the Windows Vista, I
don't get the option to extract them. Is it possible that it's because I
have notepad as the default program to open them with? Do I need to save
them somewhere special? I'm just saving them on the desktop.

Are they saved .zip or .rar? If its .RAR you need to download WinRAR to
unzip and install them through Add Font dialog under Control Panel > Fonts >
right click menu > Install Fonts.

They're saved as zip. I can't find the extract button when I rightclick, is
there another way to find it, or something I'm doing wrong?

Download WinRAR then try extracting the fonts to a folder.

I shouldn't have to, I've unzipped files and fonts before on the comp. I
just want to know it what situations it wouldn't show I can.

I think its something thats wrong with the file you downloaded. Find out
from the website if the package is supported on Windows Vista.

That's probably it. However, the association settings can be fixed by downloading and applying the .zip fix from here:

You should obtain WinRAR regardless. I've used it for the past few years
and find it more flexible and easier to use, as compared to Winzip,
