I just re-installed Windows XP Professional on a friend's computer then ran
the gaunlet on Windows Update to ensure that her computer is current.

Funny thing is that something went afoul after the patches were installed &
the system rebooting because now, I can't get Windows Update to work which
really upsets me since all I did was update & reboot AFTER having downloaded
& installed patched thru the Windows Update.

Here's the message I get when I try to run Windows Update:

Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is
disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of
critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable
downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting.

That message is a load of BS since those services ARE RUNNING so I don't
know what the deal is but this is a blatant error on Microsoft's side of the
field. Oh, and then try to find help and the only solution is to post & hope
someone responds or pay upwards of $35 to get them to fix THIER mistake.

It is a scary scenario that, you want to make sure your OS is patched &
protected but it seems the fix makes more problems

I hope someone can give me some advice to FIX this problem CAUSED by Windows
Update.

When you "ran the gauntlet", did you turn the firewall on before you
connected to the Internet?

Did you check the " RPC locator" service? It should be on manual.
Did you check that the three services mentioned in the error are set to
Automatic and then restarted?
I assume you followed these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click
Properties.
3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.
5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click
Properties.
6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.
7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

(All of that was gleemed from others with your problem who have fixed it -
just a simple search.)
