I get an automatic update msg. I installed the update, but the icon on the
taskbar comes back to tell me there is the same update. The update is:
Cumulative Security update for outlook express6 SP1 (KBB23353). How do I get
rid of the icon?

Hi,

If you have the security update KB897715 (MS05-030) installed,
it could be caused by that.

Temporarily uninstall KB897715 (from Add/Remove Programs), and see if
KB823353 (MS04-018) installs successfully. Then install KB897715 again.

More info/workarounds here as well:

I have the same problem, but cannot find 897715 in my program listing. What
are the options for allowing the update 823353 to install? I have gone
through article 555398 and it provided no help. I am using windows 2000 with
service pack 4. Out look Express is 6.00.2800.1106. Any help would be
appreciated.

See this KB article:

A dialog box with no text appears if you reply to a news message in Outlook
Express 6 Service Pack 1 (You may ignore the title)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555398

Also see this post of mine in a recent newsgroup discussion:
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...7f3b0ed2?hl=en

For a reason yet to be determined, Windows Update was offering OE updates in
the wrong order to Win2k SP4 and WinXP SP1 users. They straightened it out
c. 14 Aug-05. Here's the fix:

1. Uninstall 'Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB897715' via Add/Remove Programs and
reboot.

2a. Assuming MSOE.DLL is now v6.00.2800.1409 or earlier (i.e.,
v6.00.2800.1123 or v6.00.2800.1106), install (KB)823353 manually using the
file downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2b. Optional: Reboot and install KB887797 via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...6-a1a3da675baf

3. Reboot and (re)install (KB)897715 manually using the file downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-28502b3d2518

Alternatively, after #1 above, check in at Windows Update and install
whatever OE Cumulative Update is now offered and reboot. Then return to
Windows Update to see if another one's now offered you.

Let's back up a bit.

OE Help > About > Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL, INETCOMM.DLL and
WAB32.DLL are listed here?

Add/Remove Programs: Are *any* updates listed? [Not sure if this option
appears in Win2K but is the ''Show Updates" box at the top checked?]

PA Bear,
My OE Help says:
MSOE.DLL 6.00.2800.1506, inet.com.dll is version 6.00.2800.1506, wab32.dll
is 6.00.2800.1106.
As far as the add remove programs there are 11 windows 2000 hotfixes showing
but none of them are KB897715. I do not see a box to check "show updates"
and I don't see a file with *any*.
Any ideas what to do next? Thanks much for your help.
Robert K Wood.

Most odd. When you say you don't find 'Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB897715' in
Add/Remove Programs, I believe you.

Does Show Update History at Windows Update website list 897715, Robert?

You could get a similar list from your last update.exe with its /L switch.

Search your harddrive for update.exe and then order the results
by Date Accessed (assuming you wouldn't have accessed an older one
after doing the last one). If you haven't done a sort on Date Accessed
before you will probably have to add that column to the Search Results
window (e.g. View, Choose Details...) Select the last one and then open
up your Run... dialog (e.g. press Win-R). Delete anything which is already
in its input box. Drag the selected update.exe to the Run... dialog's input
box (making sure that it replaces anything which was already there or first
deleting anything which was already there or deleting afterwards anything
which was already there.) If there are any spaces in the resulting pathname
make sure that the whole file name is enclosed in doublequotes.
Then add a space and the /L switch and press Enter (or click OK).

You should then see a sorted list of your updates and hotfixes.
Note: it is just a simple sort which doesn't consider the implications
of sorting with the various prefixes so you may have to look in more
than one group for the number you're interested in.

BTW I'm not familiar with your OS so I hope those UI features map to it
somehow. Also, in case it's just a matter of overlooking an entry due to bad
ordering in the Add/Remove Programs list, if you have a Sort by: control
on yours try changing that to Date Last Used for a slightly different view of
your updates and hotfixes.

Hmm... I was about to suggest also using the MBSA but apparently
this product is not supported by that tool yet. Instead there is this: ;o

<title>KB894193 - How to obtain and use the Enterprise Update Scan Tool</title>

(link from Security Bulletin MS05-030)

Having never used this myself (or in fact even read of it before <w>)
I would be very interested in knowing if it shows you anything useful.

Good luck

Robert, does this problem persist or has it been resolved? If not, read on.

Try the following method of forcing the install of KB823353 (which must be
present before you can install KB897715):

First clear History, delete Cookies and delete TIF via IE: Tools > Options >
General, then...

1. Download Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1
(KB823353) from the following link and save it to your desktop:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode. (During the reboot, keep pressing the
F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears > Choose Safe Mode > Enter.)

3. In Safe Mode, rename the downloaded file to KB823353.EXE and copy it to
C:\ (the root directory of drive C; assumes drive C is the boot drive)

4. Start > Run > (type in) KB823353.EXE /N:V (Note the spaces) > press
ENTER

5. Close the command window.

6. Reboot into Windows.

Afterwards check in at Windows Update to install KB897715. [If KB887797 is
offered, install it & reboot then return to Windows Update to install
KB897715.]

Alternate link to manually install 897715 in Win2K SP3 or SP4 *after*
installing 823353:
