Update 890830

After installing this update, I rebooted but the OS will not load. Safe mode
doesn't comletely load, last known config doesn't resolve, and I can no
longer reboot from CD to try and fix the install. I have a clean machine
running the new MS Antispyware, and Symantec Antivirus.

XP Pro, SP2 with all current updates.

Any thoughts on what I can do beyond a new drive and install?

This exact problem happened to me - Friday I got a "Critical Update" notice
and let the computer load it automatically. System never came back up and
can't load OS even in safe mode. DOS messages alternately indicate a HD
error or "Bad or missing command interpreter".
I took the HD to a shop and had it checked - HD is 100% good. Also
running XP Home with SP2 and all recommended updates. I have Nortons AV and
regularly run anti-spy. Never had a problem until this last update -
Anyone out there have any ideas how to fix this?

To follow up on my issue, I determined that my HD (Maxtor) was slowly dying.
(Shouldn't a HD last more than 1.5 years!!!).

This is the 2nd time in a month that I have rebooted a machine after
applying a MS update and had my machine not recover. In this case, sectors
were randomly going bad and corrupting files.

My next HD (Seagate) will have a 5 year warranty. Odds that it will make it
that far?
