Anyone else getting this error message when 925672 fails to install?
Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: MSXML
4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672)

I also see the following in the log file: WARNING: Command line install
completed. Return code = 0x00000643, Result = Failed, Reboot required = false

and WARNING: Exit code = 0x8024200B

OSE.exe is set to manual and has been replaced by the same file from the
OFFICE CD. I've tried everything suggested in other posts for the 925672
failure, with no success, so I'm looking for new answers, not a link to the
Troubleshooting Windows Update page.

You're aware of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602 already, right?

Yes, that's the "Windows Troubleshooting" page I referred to in my original
post.

Tried that. It fails to install with this error:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Msxml2.DOMDocu ment.4.0\CLSID. Verify that
you have sufficienta ccess to that key, or contact your support personnel
even though I am logged on (Win XP Pro) as administrator.

Someone suggested resetting the registry security settings but that had no
effect whatsoever.

I continue to have the same problem as well. I don't know why everyone keeps
saying to try the manual install when you keep saying you have and it fails.
It would be nice if someone actually knew what the update was trying to do
and would fix the update to work.

I say "amen" to this. I have had this particular computer for 3 years and
have regularly installed all recommended updates. I do all of the things
recommended to maintain a clean computer. Only once have I had as intractable
a problem as this one. The earlier problem was resolved only after an e-mail
exchange with a Microsoft technician and involved using information in a
technical paper whose title had nothing to indicate that it would contain
anything that would apply to that problem. I'm not a computer expert but
neither am I a dunce. I've printed out half a dozen Microsoft technical
papers, most of which assume a level of knowledge far greater than I possess.
I've done some of the things recommended in the papers but since I don't
really understand some of the things I'm doing, I'm afraid to go any further
than I have for fear of really screwing up my computer. I understand why
people buy MacIntoshes.

Yes, it's obvious that there is something very wrong with the update, since
all the other updates from Oct 10 installed with no problems but apparently,
no one at Microsoft knows exactly what the problem is, so we are directed to
the Troubleshooting page, where we are expected to weed through dozens of
items like this one:

"In the status column for the unsuccessful update, click the red X.
A new window opens that displays the installation error."

Well, Microsoft, here's a news flash: Clicking the red X doesn't do
anything! Never has, probably never will. You have to right click on it and
select "Open."

Here's another gem: "Search for the installation error in the Windows Update
Troubleshooter" -- Ok, where is that located, anyway? There's no link, no
URL but if you Google it: v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot

Let's face it, the hackers are winning this war....

Here's another from one of the many technical papers I printed out:

1. Remove security update 925672 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in
Control Panel. [gee, this is the item I'm trying to install; and you're
telling me to remove it...like it's already there]

2. Delete the MSXML4.dll file from the [snip] folder. [not until I
understand what I'm doing here; the next item doesn't help]

3. Repair MSXML 4.0 by using the Add or Remove Programs item in Control
Panel. [I don't have a clue what this means. Does anyone else?]
