Update after shutting down?

I am helping an older couple learn how to use a computer. They called me
tonight - after shutting down the computer, after the computer says it is
shutting down, Window's appears to upload "1 0f 2". Sorry, but that's all it
says on the screen except a message telling them to not turn off or unplug
the computer. The message says that the computer will turn off automatically
when the update is complete. This happens every time they try to shut down
using the windows start/ shut down computer etc. They have to resort to the
power button to turn it off. The update goes on for a least an hour and a 1/2
(that's how long they waited to call me). There is no progress bar and they
can't get into the Task Manager. Also, when I get them to view an
installation history of Window's updates, they don't have any record of the
one we keep shutting down. Any ideas?

I have the same problem -- I did not notice the update running when I shut
down my laptop and the same Window's screen you have got is still running
after 3 hours.

How long should the update take to run?

I am also having the same problem after six hours. Has anyone tried shutting
the computer down? If so, did it cause any problems?

I am having the same problem and it has been going on for about six hours.
Has anyone tried shutting down the computer during the installation? If so,
did it cause any problems to the computer?

Hi

I had a very similar problem for the first time last night. On shut down I
got the message 'Windows is updating (1 of 3).' Then on a second screen 'Do
not turn off your computer it will turn itself off automatically'. I will
let it run overnight and see if it does update. I have installed service
pack 2. I am running windows XP.

See the response from Paul B on a thread higher up called - 'AUTOMATIC UPDATE
STALLS ON SHUTDOWN. I'm going to try it tonight.

I'M YELLING ON PURPOSE, I HAVE TO NOW SHUT MY COMPUTER OFF BY DOING A
HARD BOOT WHILE IT'S WRITING TO MY DISK, IT NEVER SHUTS DOWN NOW, SAYS
UPDATING 1 OF 1 FOR 8 HOURS IT RAN, NOW EVERYTIME I HAVE TO HOLD DOWN
ON THE POWER BUTTON AND HARD START IT WHILE ITS ACTUALLY WRITING TO MY
DISK, THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.

I have the same problem. I chose the option to upgrade and shut down last
evening. When I returned to work this morning the messages "Installing
update 1 of 3." and "Do not turn off or unplug your computer..." are still
alternately displaying on my screen. I am running XP sp2.
