I am running a factory installed version of Vista Home Premium on a Gateway
NX860XL and have recently installed XP Pro in a dual boot configuration on a
partition labeled E. When I go to the update site with XP, updates download
but will not automatically install. Is there something I need to do
differently since this operating system is not on the C drive? The XP is
licensed, legal and validated.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a
Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Ignore the title and do Method 1 first. If no joy, follow the steps laid
out here to install the latest Version of the Windows Update Agent:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1172

Do the installation from the Command Prompt instructions that include
/wuforce.

There may also be an issue if there is greater free space on the Vista
partition and the updates are being downloaded to that partition.

Show hidden files, folders, and system files on the XP partition and
check in the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download subfolder
to see if the updates are being stored there.

Your WinXP partition should be hidden from the Vista partition. Only you
can fix that.

I had already tried the first fix (kb 943144) and it only worked for the next
set of updates. What I'm doing now is having update notify me of available
updates then manually downloading them by their kb# and installing them
myself. It takes a little bit more time and it isn't automatic but I'm
getting what I need which is the important part.

I'm not willing to buy or use a third party app. to do that based on the
wealth of negative feed back posted around from people who have. I have xp
running fine now and the only problem is that updates aren't exactly
automatic but I'm told what I need then manually download and install it
which is fine.

It 'sounds' as if the dual boot with Vista was not set up properly. But,
as long as the Security updates are getting installed, that's the main
point.

You're right about having access to updates being the most important thing.
As far as the dual boot setup goes, in brief.......I used diskmgmt.msc to
shrink volume C by 5g, right clicked and chose new simple volume, assigned a
temporary drive letter and performed a quick NTFS format. Then I renamed all
my drives (there is a factory recovery partition D) so the partition where I
intended to install XP was labelled E, the optical drive F, card reader G,
external drives H, I, J. During this step I had all peripherals up with the
exception of floppy A. Next, I exited diskmgmt and did a restart with the XP
installation disk in the optical drive and the sata driver from Gateway on a
floppy in the A drive. I followed the on screen instructions for the XP
install and then did a restart with my Vista installation disk, chose repair,
selected the Command Prompt and typed
bootrec.exe /fix MBR enter
bootrec.exe /fixBoot enter
closed the Command Prompt and restarted from C. I then used cmd.exe to
select Vista as the default OS.
bcdedit -set {ntldr} device partition=C:
bcdedit -set {ntldr} path \ntldr
bcdedit -displayorder {ntldr} -addlast
bcdedit -set {ntldr} description "Microsoft Windows XP"
I then booted to XP, intalled all of the drivers starting with the chipset
and tried to activate and register XP which was the only problem. I was
unable to validate with the initial code or any newly generated codes. I
spent most of a day on the phone with support, was told that my version of XP
(OEM) would never generate a usable validation code and that I should use
media exchane services to upgrade it to a full version. Media exchange said
they would not do this. Back to support where I explained the situation to a
fourth rep. who told me my copy of XP was legal and unused but that the
keycode had expired. He gave me a new keycode and it worked to activated and
registerd after that. Then I went to update, authenticated, got SP3,
restarted went back, got Netframework, IE 7 and additional updates. These
all downloaded and installed correctly but everything since, the installation
fails. Sorry for running on, thanks for reading this.
