You're right about having access to updates being the most important thing.
As far as the dual boot setup goes, in brief.......I used diskmgmt.msc to
shrink volume C by 5g, right clicked and chose new simple volume, assigned a
temporary drive letter and performed a quick NTFS format. Then I renamed all
my drives (there is a factory recovery partition D) so the partition where I
intended to install XP was labelled E, the optical drive F, card reader G,
external drives H, I, J. During this step I had all peripherals up with the
exception of floppy A. Next, I exited diskmgmt and did a restart with the XP
installation disk in the optical drive and the sata driver from Gateway on a
floppy in the A drive. I followed the on screen instructions for the XP
install and then did a restart with my Vista installation disk, chose repair,
selected the Command Prompt and typed
bootrec.exe /fix MBR enter
bootrec.exe /fixBoot enter
closed the Command Prompt and restarted from C. I then used cmd.exe to
select Vista as the default OS.
bcdedit -set {ntldr} device partition=C:
bcdedit -set {ntldr} path \ntldr
bcdedit -displayorder {ntldr} -addlast
bcdedit -set {ntldr} description "Microsoft Windows XP"
I then booted to XP, intalled all of the drivers starting with the chipset
and tried to activate and register XP which was the only problem. I was
unable to validate with the initial code or any newly generated codes. I
spent most of a day on the phone with support, was told that my version of XP
(OEM) would never generate a usable validation code and that I should use
media exchane services to upgrade it to a full version. Media exchange said
they would not do this. Back to support where I explained the situation to a
fourth rep. who told me my copy of XP was legal and unused but that the
keycode had expired. He gave me a new keycode and it worked to activated and
registerd after that. Then I went to update, authenticated, got SP3,
restarted went back, got Netframework, IE 7 and additional updates. These
all downloaded and installed correctly but everything since, the installation
fails. Sorry for running on, thanks for reading this.
