Update and SP2 problems, EC80080008 and 80242FFF

Hi,

Recently installed XP as an upgrade from Win2000 professional. Windows
update worked fine for a while, but after one of the updates (before i had
installed SP1 or SP2) the whole machine crashed completely. Using the repair
function on the XP CD-rom I was able to restore everything, but now I face 2
specific problems:

1. When trying to install SP2 I get installation Installation Failure
80242FFF. After installing the KB842773 fix i get Installation Failure
80080008. It just won't budge.

2. Windows update has run into some sort of "loop". It tells me I have 8
upgrades, I agree to download them and to install them, the program then
informs me that every update has been installed correctly and is complete -
yet 2 seconds later it prompts me to download the exact same updates again
and install them. And so it goes on and on and on. I don't know how to solve
it.


What do to? Perhaps try the fix option on the CR rom some more?
