Because I have a slow connection I quite often select all updates and begin
the update process to see how big it is/how long it takes. If it would take
too long I would cancel it and start it not long before I go to bed. Only
this time the updates dissapeared, windows updates simply informs me that
windows is up to date. Which makes me wonder what other updates I'm
missing... can anyone help me with this please?

Are you referring to Automatic Updates or updates obtained via either of
the update sites ?

Here's a list, by month, of all updates offered :

Description of Software Update Services and Windows Server Update
Services changes in content for 2008
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894199

At the very bottom of that page is a link for 2007 content:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947503/

You can run MBSA to confirm that security updates offered for the system
are installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

But the above comes with a caveat:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) support for Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931943/

I *think* you can access the new Microsoft Update Catalog and choose the
updates individually in Vista using IE :
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Home.aspx
