update caused problem

a few weeks ago I clicked on a Window's update. When the computer rebooted,
I had a new Windows and had to install my hardware. Now I am unable to open
all my old files........What happened? How do I get back to my old system?
I tried system restore but it would not let me restore before the update.
Help!!
