Update causing problems

SBS2000 environment.
Most recently available update from MS appears to have "broken" several
systems.
After updating 16 of the 42 systems here I have 5 exhibiting the exact same
problem and have stopped applying the most recent update. THe problem is
that after the update from the Windows Update Site successfully completes
and the system is rebooted, the user will log back in...and end up with a
blank desktop. No icons, no start button, no task bar..nothing. I have tried
Task Manager to start explorer.exe and this will appear in the list of
running processes...then a moment later it is gone and there is still a
blank desktop. The only way around this, which is unacceptable, is to give
the user DOMAIN ADMIN privileges, or allow them to log on locally as
administrator, which is also unacceptable. This has happened to both XP and
W2K stations. My next course of action is going to be to remove the
computer and user from the domain and then add them back in to see if this
makes a difference, but I would like to avoid this if something a bit less
time consuming would work.

Any help would be appreciated.

HTH
Bryan

I had one student come in with this problem -- except his explorer.exe
did actually start and remain stable, but just not recover the desktop.
I edited the value for Shell in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ from blank to explorer.exe. It sounds easy
when I say it, but I've been down many blind alleys today. HTH

THanks for the suggestion, however this was not the case here. The registry
entry is present and even removing it and putting it back in did not help.

THanks again...
