I have automatic update set to inform me but not to download or install.

Out of interest, how frequently does AU check for updates? Is it only at
boot up? Is there a setting where you can specify when it checks?

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

By default, AU will sync with the WU server once every 24 hours (usually
within 17-22 hours, actually).

The download entitled "Windows Update Explained" found on this page should
answer most of your questions:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/u...t/default.aspx

> Is there a setting where you can specify when it checks?

No, but you can specify when updates are scheduled to be installed. See

YW. If you stated your Windows version, I could offer more information.

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

If you configure AU to the Download but Notify setting, you'll be able to
control when the updates are installed.

If you use the Notify Only setting, you will be able to (1) select which
updates are downloaded, as well as (2) which updates are installed and (3)
when.
