Update Configuration Error

Recently, upon shutting down my laptop for the day (Windows Vista Home Basic
T2080-on Toshiba) updates were installed as usual. However, two days later
when I turned my laptop back on and it began configuring the updates at start
up, a serious and ongoing error occurred. Reaching stage 3 of 3, the
configuration froze at 63% and has remained there for almost an entire week!
I tried shutting down and restarting but I cannot access the demand or log in
for that matter. I even tried, in desperation, to take the battery out and
try to restart it in hopes of fixing it but it still returns to the same
thing.

I don't know what to do and I really need my laptop back up for work ASAP!!

Thanks for any help offered,
EA

Can you, by repeatedly pressing the F8 key about once per second, get a
Startup Menu? If so, choose Safe Mode and do a System Restore.

No It's only showing that it is configuring and responds to no commands.
It's the configuration screen shown before the start up process is even
complete; before it even shows a log in screen.

May not be the same Update, but it should be the same fix. Then again, it
also implies that F8 should work to get to Safe Mode. What do you have for
installation media? A Vista DVD or what?
