Update Configuring Fails

I normally have Windows Update set to Install Automatically. When
closing down Windows Media I get a notice that there are 4 updates.
They get loaded and then the computer shuts down.
When I start the computer again, usually the next day, I get a message
that it is Configuring Windows and I wait. After a while, it seems
like 10 minutes, I am notified that the Reconfiguration Failed and
windows starts.
This problem has been going on for about a week. How can I avoid it?
thanks for any and all help

Click the Start orb > click All Programs > *right* click Windows Media
Player. Agree to the UAC prompt.
Close Windows Media Player.

Were the updates offered again ?
Did the install this time ?
