Update confusion (XP Home Edition) after running system restore

Using XP Home Edition on Compaq Presario purchased Feb 2004.

Modem and internet connection OK (MSN is the IP; using one version older
from the latest MSN software)
Using Zone Alarm firewall version 4.0.146.029
Norton Anti Virus, version 9.05.15, OEM for HPQ(60)

QUESTION I:
Installed all available Windows (and Norton) updates right after purchse,
but the following Windows updates failed to install (Feb. 2004):
1) KB 826 939: update rollup 1 for Win XP
2) KB 824 105: security update for Win XP

Those updates DOWNLOADED just fine, but post-install window showed them in a
red-colored text list headed, "The following updates failed to install"
(Sys working normally--many other updates in same "batch" installed ok)

Could the reason for failure be:
a) The 2 updates don't apply to Home Edition?
b) The 2 updates were already installed on the computer from the factory (or
the edition of XP was later than the updates)? (If so, why did the update
site list them as needed? Can that happen?)
c) My system was already hacked, and some bug prevented me from getting the
max. security?
Could there be other reasons?

In July, many updates intsalled thru Automatic Update feature.

QUESTION II:
LATER in July, had problems staying on line, probs. staying logged into
messengers, odd things with ZoneAlarm (suspected hackers, not really sure)
and (Using Compaq System Restore--non-destructive--restored system files and
factory installed software to their original factory states.

Bottom line is that now when I go to Windows Update site, the progress
window looks it installed all the updates, but after that window closes, I
get a red list of 9 critical updates that supposedly failed. This was Aug 5
and 6--same failures each time. Hmm, funny that the ones that failed were
the critical ones.

Did these 9 updates fail to install this time because those updates were
non-removable from the system when I did the system restore? Am I
proteceted? or what? AH! HELP!

Interesting that I went into Update Log, which I found just browsing (and
don't understand which update is which from its text) and according to that.
all the updates have the word "SUCCESS" next to them.

Confused Chris

Try installing updates, no more than three at a time, or individually for
failed ones. Reboot after each update
Do NOT use winupdate for drivers
