update with data card help

hello,
i have an alltell data card pc5750 utstarcom

when i logged off my computer 1 of 9 windows updates installed because i
have automatic updates.
i was on the internet prior to shutting down and all worked fine.
after turning my computer back on when i connected, my data card shows i am
definately connected but when i hit the E for exlorer all the pages are
blank, it is as though i am not connected. so i did a system resore and wa
la back on the internet and all is well UNTIL i went to shut down and the 1
of 9 updates came back on. when i started my computer the same thing
happened.
all tell said that something with your updates is interferring with the data
card and to shut of automatic updates!!!

so now how do i keep my computer secure. does not make much sense to do
the 1 of 9 window updates and then not be able to open internet explorer!!!

i have windows xp. thanks
