The drivers that Windows Update lists are the latest drivers that are
Windows certified. That means the manufacturer has to submit the driver
(Microsoft doesn't go out looking for them) and Microsoft then has to
test them (a lengthy process with give and take between Microsoft and
the manufacturer) on a variety of Operating Systems and conditions.
That's the reason the Windows Update drivers list is so far behind the
current versions. And that's also the reason you don't download any
drivers from Windows Update, but go to the manufacturer's website
instead to get the latest.
I hesitate to mention this, but the only time any of Windows Update
drivers should be used is in an extremely dire situation where nothing
else will work and a(n allegedly working) baseline needs to be
established during troubleshooting.
