Update died during install on Windowx XP-(Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error)

Just purchased a laptop with Windows XP. Went to Windows
update site, and launched critical updates. Updates
downloaded but died during install. Now Windows update
does not list any updates installed, and doesn't identify
any that are necessary. Error message from Windows Update
log is at the bottom the log file below. Any ideas?

What is the URL you entering when accessing the Windows Update site.?

If you are accessing the Windows Update V5 site, please try registry the
following dll's.

Let's verify. Please register the following Files:

Click Start > Run > Type the follow commands in the Open box (one at a
time, in sequence):
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

There is at least one error in this list which I have reported before.
Why is wuauclt.exe still being included?

Here is what I wrote about it before when somebody reported
(inevitably) that trying to register it failed:

I think that that must have been a typo. There are no external entry points
in that module (let alone one for DllRegisterServer.)

However, there are some other registerable modules which start with wu:

wuaueng.dll
wuaueng1.dll
wuweb.dll

The latter has nothing to do with Automatic Update and is just being
included for completeness.

I wrote that last sentence assuming that based on the wu- prefix instead
of the wuau- prefix and based on the Description in its Properties:
Windows Update Web Control
Since then I have seen it suggested as a means of reactivating V5 so I'm
not so confident about my "nothing to do with Automatic Update" any more.

I would appreciate your comments.
